"Th' first thing to have in a libry is a shelf. Fr'm time to time this can be decorated with lithrachure. But th' shelf is th' main thing." Finley Peter Dunne
"The Librarian was, of course, very much in favour of reading in general, but readers in particular got on his nerves...He liked people who loved and respected books, and the best way to do that, in the Librarian's opinion, was to leave them on the shelves where Nature intended them to be." Library Links

Who would have thought that librarians would come up with so many web sites? Are their libraries less busy than ours? Are they single w/o children and hence able to spend large quantities of time writing endlessly about their professions? Does the high number of blogs indicate that librarians--as a group--need to get a life?

Well, it depends on what your life is. If your profession is just a job that pays the bills, it's not likely you'll blog about it. If your profession is also your avocation, you might be more likely to blog about it. I think it's remarkable that so many librarians care about their profession so much that they are blogging about it. They are sharing information with other members of the profession, conducting online discussions about library issues, sharing innovative solutions, trends, and research in the library profession. Of course, a number of library bloggers have "alternative" library careers; they're consultants or authors or have some kind of library specialty. But being a blogger in the newer technological world is like writing articles for library publications--it's a way to advance a career and to let the world know about innovative ideas or programs. So are they less busy, single, childless, or slacking off? No, in fact I think you'll find that library bloggers think very deeply about the library and its place in society and are devoted enough to the profession to spend professional and personal time sharing their thoughts with other professionals.
